Lying at the foot of the 1339 ft Mount Gabriel 70 miles from Cork City is the
attractive seaside town of Schull. Regarded as one of West Cork's most popular
tourist resorts, Schull really comes to life during the summer months when a huge
number of tourists and enthusiastic yachtsmen moor in Scull Harbour to compete
in Schull's two sailing festivals. The International Sailing Festival for children
which is held during the second week of July attracts teenagers from far and wide.
The famous Schull Regatta is held during the week following the August Bank Holiday
weekend, when Schull really comes alive.
To cater for the influx of tourists Schull provides a wide and plentiful range
of activities both for the active and passive visitor. Schull is host to Ireland's
only Planetarium with a number of Star Shows throughout the summer. There are
a number of cheese-making farms which provide an interesting visit. Alternatively
Schull offers the chance to explore the islands of Cape Clear and Sherkin Island
with a ferry service going daily to the islands. For the more active visitor there
are a number of outdoor activities on offer including golf, pitch and putt, sea
angling, fishing, windsurfing, horse-riding, bike rental and diving.
Schull, like most Irish towns, has plenty of nightly activity. A number of
pubs in the area provide a variety of music and there are also many good restaurants
in Schull.
