Situated on the West coast of Clare overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is the seaside
resort of Kilkee. With a population of only 1300, this busy little holiday town
has played host to tourists for the past 200 years. Known as the gateway to the
Loophead Peninsula, Kilkee is one of the main tourist centres and caters for all
members of the family.
Kilkee boasts a beautiful golden sandy beach stretching over one and a half
miles which, with its Blue Flag status, makes it the safest beach on the West
Coast of Ireland. There are some breathtaking walks both to the north of the beach
where one can explore George's Head (so called as it is said to resemble a former
King of England), and to the south where one can walk for sixteen miles along
the cliff and explore Loop Head.
Kilkee is best known as a Diving Centre with both shore dives from the Duggera
Rocks and boat dives from the Black Rocks further out available. All information
on dives and equipment for hire is available at the Kilkee Diving and Waterworld
Centre. For the Golf enthusiast, there is a splendid 18-hole championship golf
course which will provide a challenge to even the best of golfers. Other activities
available in Kilkee include pony trekking, pitch & putt and for the younger members
of the family "Waterworld" is located as you come into town. Here, there are a
number of slides, gushers, geysers and pools for all to enjoy.
There is a variety of restaurants to be found in Kilkee and like all Irish
towns there are numerous pubs providing plenty of entertainment. Traditional Music
sessions can be found in a number of pubs and there are many B&Bs to be found
in the area to cater for the huge influx of tourists who visit Kilkee every summer.
For the more adventurous there is a youth hostel as well as camping facilities
within the area.
